James A. “Jim” Walker, Jr., 73, of Rogers, Arkansas, died February 29, 2020. He was born in Athens, Tennessee on November 1, 1946 to the late James and Louzelle Walker. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Susan; daughter, Ginny (Jason) Dye; son, Andrew Walker; step-grandchildren, Jayce and Taylor Dye. He is also survived by his brother, Ronnie (Jane) Walker, of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and multiple nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Jackie.
Jim was a 1964 graduate of West End High School, Nashville, TN, where he excelled in sports. He graduated from Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU), with a B.S. in Accounting in 1972. He served his country in the U.S. Army from 1966-1969. Upon graduation he began his accounting career at Touche-Ross, as an auditor. He became a CPA in 1975. In 1979, he joined Kuhn’s Big K Stores, Inc., as Vice-President, Treasurer and Controller. When the company was acquired by Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., he and Susan moved to Rogers, AR. He retired as Senior Vice-President and Controller in February 2003, with 24 years of valued and dedicated service. When shareholders held an Annual Report with figures that seemed to span the width of the page, that was the hard work of Jim and the associates under his supervision.
He was a faithful servant at Oakley Chapel United Methodist Church for the past 12 years, where he served as Chairman of the Finance Committee and church Treasurer. He enjoyed his men’s Bible study twice weekly.
A sports enthusiast, he was happiest watching sports on TV, or attending Razorback games as a Razorback Foundation, Broyles-Matthews Scholarship contributor.
When Jim had to leave his days of tennis and racquetball behind, after a number of years during which he participated in many Cancer Charity Challenge tournaments, he turned to golf. Golfing with his group of friends was his most enjoyable form of recreation after retirement, playing several times each week. He was proud of his two hole-in-one’s! However, he acknowledged that golf was a most frustrating game! He enjoyed restoring and collecting old cars, being especially fond of his Trans Am, Z car, and Model A. He also had an extensive coin and stamp collection. He enjoyed his retirement, life with his family and good friends, and life on the “hill”, where the family has lived all their Arkansas lives. It was a good life.
Jim was a member of the Arkansas and Tennessee Society of CPA’s, and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. He has been a generous supporter for the past 30 years of the Jones College of Business at MTSU, his alma mater. He is a past member of the Rogers Early Risers Rotary Club.
He will be greatly missed by “CeCe.”
