Commander Robert Gordon Nolan, USN (Ret), 72, of Rogers, Arkansas, went to be with His Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, Thursday, July 19, 2018 in St. Louis, MO. He was born March 12, 1946 in White Plains, New York to Thomas Francis Nolan and Marjorie Oakley Nolan.
He was 1968 graduate of the United States Naval Academy, Annapolis, Maryland, having received his appointment from Senator Jacob Javits (R-NY). Upon graduation from the Naval Academy he entered flight training at Whiting Field, Pensacola, Florida and received his wings in the spring of 1969 and began his successful career in Naval Aviation, flying P-3’s at various Navy commands throughout the world. He received his Master’s Degree in Political Science from Georgetown University, Washington, D.C.
He commanded Patrol Squadron Eleven at Naval Air Station Brunswick, Maine. He attended the Naval War College, Newport, Rhode Island and was selected as the American representative to the Foreign Officers Exchange Course. He was then selected to serve as the American Exchange Officer with the Canadian Forces at CFB, Greenwood, Nova Scotia.
His final tour of duty was on assignment in the Pentagon for the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations. Although selected for Captain, Commander Nolan put his family first and opted for retirement in 1989 and reside Northern Virginia.
Even upon retirement he was contacted the rest of his life by former shipmates who always called him, “Skipper.”
After a distinguished career, he retired and was employed by Scientific Research Corporation in Arlington, Virginia and Atlanta, Georgia. After SRC, he subsequently worked for Marsh & McLennan Securities Corporation defending military medical benefits. He then went to work as a certified financial planner for the Military Officers Association, Alexandria, Virginia. He concluded his working career as a private financial consultant.
Upon full retirement, he served as Past President of Military Officers Association, Bella Vista Chapter and was a current member of that chapter, as well as the Northwest Arkansas Chapter of the Military Officers Association, Fayetteville, Arkansas.
Robert “Bob” and his wife, Marsha retired to Northwest Arkansas in 2011. He was a faithful and devoted member of Cross Church, Pinnacle Hills Campus in Rogers, Arkansas.
He served on the POA Board of the Saddlebrook Farms in Rogers.
He was a loving husband, dedicated father to his son and daughter and devoted to his four grandsons.
If you were to ask anyone about Bob, their first response would be that he was a man of the highest integrity, living his life with a great faith in Christ, his love of the United States of America and his devotion to the United States Navy.
Robert is survived by his wife of 49 years, Marsha Narrell Nolan; his son, Christopher Todd Nolan (Kimberly) of Broomfield, Colorado; his daughter, Stefanie Jill Nolan of San Diego, California; his brother, Richard T. Nolan (Gretchen) of Red Lodge, Montana; his sister, Jean Elizabeth Benson (Edward) of Richmond, Virginia; grandsons, William (13), Matthew (12), and Jack (9) of Broomfield and Simon Corrales (4) of San Diego; a nephew, Andrew Spitzer (Julee) of Richmond, Virginia.
Funeral services will be at 11:00AM, Wednesday, July 25,
2018 at Cross Church, 2448 S Pinnacle Hills Pkwy, Rogers, AR, 72758 with Pastor Jamie Lantzsch officiating.
Visitation will be from 10:00AM until service time.
Burial will be at 2:00PM at the National Cemetery in Fayetteville, Arkansas with CDR Richard “Sam” Sansom, USN (Ret) officiating the military funeral.
