Charles Robert Hungate, 88, of Gravette, Arkansas died Monday, August 3, 2015, in Bentonville,
AR. He was born October 21, 1926, in Thompsonville, IL.
He proudly served in the United States Army near the end of WWII. He was sent to the Philippine
Islands for a short time and then came home to the USA for the remainder of his duty.
He worked numerous jobs in his early life—drove delivery trucks, construction, open pit mining,
ranch work, and institutional cooking. Ultimately, Charles went into business by learning to repair
television sets. Eventually he owned and operated a Radio Shack for over 30 years in Anaconda,
MT.
He was a faithful member of the Anaconda Assembly of God Church, having served as a deacon,
and played guitar in the orchestra. At the end of his life, he still retained the beautiful singing voice
that the Lord had given him.
In his leisure time, he loved the outdoors and spent time traveling, camping, hunting, fishing,
snow catting, and caring for his pet dogs that were always present in the Hungate home; the
name HUNGATE is a derivation from the English HOUNDS GATE.
The last 20 years of his life were spent in Arkansas tending to his vegetable garden, and always
declaring that “it would be smaller next year”; the garden continued to increase in size.
He was family-oriented, and participated in the home-schooling of his youngest son. Charles
included prayer every day of his life; he would never eat a meal without thanking the Lord for His
provision.
Charles is survived by his wife of 27 years, Evelyn Hardtla Hungate and son, Kevin Charles
Hungate.
His wife of 35 years, Jean Bridgewater Hungate, preceded Charles in death 1988; a son from that
marriage, Robert Stewart Hungate and wife, Jody survive. They blessed Charles with three
grandchildren Heath, Shane, and Kassandra Hungate, and 3 great-grandchildren. A step-son from
that marriage also survives; Dan Eide and 2 grandchildren, Heather Benn and Todd Eide, and 2
great-grandchildren.
Two daughters, Carol Naroian and Sheila Knoeptfle survive from a previous marriage.
Charles Robert Hungate was one of six children born to Wade Stewart Hungate and Ethel Jane
Dye Hungate. Charles’ younger sister, Frankie Hungate Senesac and husband Tony survive; they
live in Manteno, IL. Several nephews and nieces also survive. Preceding him in death were Eulah
Melvin, Paul Hungate, Georgia “Jo” Hungate, and Vondaleigh Mezo.
