October 2, 2016
Rogers, Arkansas
Leatrice “Letty” Lorain Bender Hofstra, 89, of Rogers, AR passed away
Sunday, October 2, 2016. She grew up on a cattle ranch in southern desert of
Arizona’s, near Gila Bend, with her parents, Ormal Lester and Laura May
McCormick Bender. Her father, whom she adored, was very instrumental in
teaching her the ways of the land. During WWII, Letty graduated high school
in a nearby town called Casa Grande. After the war, she married Richard
Hargus and the couple lived in Prescott, AZ with their six children.

In May of 1969, Letty married Peter Robert Hofstra and moved to Copper
Canyon Ranch in Camp Verde, AZ, where she and peter continued her
ranching heritage. Expressing their entrepreneurship, her and peter went on to
construct a shopping center in a very small town that didn’t have much. Not
only did they enrich their own lives, but also the lives of their community.

Upon semi-retirement in the 1970’s, they purchased a cattle ranch in Lead
Hill, AR. Still loving the deserts of Arizona, she embraced the forests of
Arkansas. As time marched on and retirement set in, the couple moved to a
more leisurely lifestyle in Rogers to escape the cold winters. After few years,
they return to the warmth of the Arizona desert where they were active in
building cisterns for the preservation of Big Horn Mountain Sheep. They
would also return to her homestead, which continues today to be protected as
a historical site by the United States Bureau of Land Management.

Peter and Letty were active in the Haitian missions where they went on
several excursions with the Immanuel Church groups. They were able to
provided God’s word, dental care and their expertise in construction
projects. From what they learned in their Baptist teachings, they were able to
assist and benefit the communities in Haiti.

Letty was a faithful member of Grace Baptist Church in Rogers.
She was preceded in death by her parents.

Letty is survived by her loving husband of 47 years, Peter; six children; nine
grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
