Robert Vernon Shaffer, age 81, of Bentonville, AR passed away peacefully on April 30, 2010 at
Circle of Life Hospice in Springdale, AR.
Bob was born in McCune, KS on Feb. 20, 1929 to the late Robert Lee and Martha Anna
Shaffer. He graduated from McCune High School in 1946. He moved to Wichita, KS after
high school where he met and married Barbara Ann Rush. After the death of his first wife in
1990 he met and married Johnnie Faye Bonds Bolain on April 20, 1991.
He moved to Rogers, AR in 1977, after retiring as a Captain of the Wichita, KS Fire
Department, where he was employed for 27 years. He helped organize and train the Beaver
Lake Fire Department of Rogers, AR. After moving to Bentonville Bob was very active in
volunteering at the Rogers Recycle Center, Helping Hands, NW Medical Center of Bentonville
and Rocky Creek Horse Ranch. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Bentonville.
Bob loved sports and was an avid Razorback fan. He enjoyed landscaping, reading, traveling
and square dancing. He loved people and was a good neighbor. Of all the things Bob enjoyed,
he found the most joy from loving and spending time with his children, grandchildren and
extended family.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Barbara Ann Rush Shaffer of 40 years, and his
sister Minnie Tenbush.
He is survived by his wife Johnnie, two sons: Gary Shaffer of Concordia, KS, Randy Shaffer
and his wife Cindy of Wichita, KS, two step sons, Jarrett Bolain and his wife Maureen of St.
Louis, MO, Curtis Bolain and his wife Laura of Columbus, OH, 3 grandchildren, Tara, Jenny,
and Greg Shaffer and 3 step grandchildren,
Hannah, Zach and Grace Bolain, a sister, Francis Reynolds of Liberty, MO, and a brother
Wayne Shaffer and his wife Liz of Carl Junction, MO.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church
Building Fund, 220 South Main, Bentonville, AR 72712 or Circle of Life Hospice, 901 Jones
Road, Springdale, Arkansas 72762.
Visitation will be in sanctuary of First Baptist Church, Bentonville from 6:00PM to 7:30PM
Monday, May 3, 2010.
Funeral services will be held in the sanctuary of First Baptist Church, Bentonville, Arkansas at
10:30AM, Tuesday, May 4, 2010 with Pastor Phillip Smith officiating.
Interment will be at Resthaven Cemetery in Wichita, Kansas at 10:00AM Thursday, May 6,
2010 with Chaplain Paul Shoemaker officiating.
