Walter E. Hamlett Jr. of Bentonville, Ark., died late Tuesday, Oct. 18,
2011, at the Circle of Life Hospice Center, just two days after celebrating
his 91st birthday with family.
He was born Oct. 16, 1920, in Buffalo, Kan., to Walter and Ida (Larson)
Hamlett.  He grew up in the Buffalo area and graduated from Buffalo High
School, where he played baseball and ran track. He then went to work for
the Santa Fe Railroad in Wichita. A World War II veteran, he entered the
U.S. Army in early 1942 and fought in the European Theater, first in the
55th Infantry, and after it was disbanded he served under General Patton.
Mr. Hamlett fought in the Battle of the Bulge and then on into Germany.
After returning to the states in the late summer of 1945, he was an MP at a
base in California. He returned to Wichita and employment with the Santa
Fe Railroad after his military service. He retired on May 7, 1971, with
honors after 29 years working in the railroad warehouse.
He married Anna Marie Cavitt on April 2, 1950., in Wichita. They lived in
Wichita until moving to the Northwest Arkansas area in the mid-1970s.
They lived in various Northwest Arkansas cities and in Vinita, Oklahoma,
during their retirement, last moving to Bentonville. At each home, Mr.
Hamlett raised a garden, which always included prize tomatoes. Mrs.
Hamlett died Feb. 1, 2006.
Mr. Hamlett is survived by a brother, Jim Hamlett of Derby, Kan., a sister,
Mardell Snider of Lee’s Summit, Mo., and numerous nieces and nephews.
A brother, Glenn Hamlett, four sisters, Norma Dennett, Katherine Hill,
Frances Boyle and Dean Megli, and four nephews preceded him in death.
Mr. Hamlett has been cremated. A graveside service will be at 11 a.m.
Saturday, Oct. 29, at Union Cemetery at Winfield, Kan., with nephews
conducting the service and with military honors.
